Diesel Particulate Filter

How do you tell if your DPF is clogged?

Symptoms of a blocked DPF

  1. Reduced engine power.
  2. Unusual engine smell.
  3. Decreased fuel economy

Can a fully blocked DPF be cleaned?

There are three ways to overcome a blocked DPF:

  1. Regeneration
  2. Replacement of the DPF
  3. Cleaning the DPF and reinstalling

DPF regeneration is done automatically by your engine management system while your truck is driven at speeds about 40 mph for around 15-20 minutes. Replacement and cleaning are exactly what they sound like.

Do DPF cleaners really work?

Sadly, for the most part, claims that a fuel additive can unblock a Diesel Particulate Filter are largely exaggerated. In truth, these additives often produce a misrepresentation of what they are actually doing, and in reality, they never come close to unblocking a DPF filter.

Can you force a DPF regeneration while driving?

You should take your car on a run to allow the regeneration process to take place. Most engine management systems will actively regenerate the DPF when the car is driven at speeds above 40mph for around 10 to 15 minutes.
